Sam's favorite flicks of 2009!!

I'm sure there's a whole bunch of people who don't feel this way, but I gotta say, I think the late 00s have been a pretty good time for movies. It's been a quiet couple of years with not a lot of masterpieces nor a lot of new exciting directors (that's definitely a big disappointment), but maybe that's just because the early 00s were such a stink fest, and we're slowly crawling out of the rubble of the collapse of the independent film industry.

For me, at least, the last 3 or 4 years have been really exciting. I've been seeing way more movies than I've ever seen in my life (I saw about 35 movies in 2009 - last year it was something like 40!) and these movies have frequently been pretty great with a lot of bad ones still being entertaining or at least interesting (by "frequently" I mean about 8 times a year).

The big exception to this, I guess, would be documentaries. For some reason there were a bunch of really great docs at the beginning of the decade and then all of a sudden there's been so very few.

Maybe I'm just getting better at avoiding films that I know in advance I won't like. Who knows? Either way, I like movies a lot right now, and I hope they continue to get better. Biggest wish of the 10's? Let's see some new hot-shot directors!
