My Slope History (Brief Summary)

Mike asked me to be a contributor to this blog, so I decided to give a quick history lesson about So-Slo, how it came to be, and what my affiliation is with it.

Back in 2002, Sam and I lived in Bushwick. It was the worst place I've ever lived, and still the worst apartment we have ever even seen in any American city. Basic items such as electricity, heat, and a working bathroom were hard to come by.

Here is me and Sam in Bushwick. Times were tough. Notice the "ska-themed" floor.

We left Bushwick in 2003 and found 213 23rd Street and moved in with this fellow (Shrews)...

Shrews

This fellow (Shrews) brought "Bangathons" into our lives, and we went wild quite often. It is a tradition that lives on to this day. Shrews also brought with him the occasional drifter and also a French punk rock band that chain smoked while eating baguettes in their briefs over the loud buzz of their electricity converters charging their phones.

After graduation, in 2005, Shrews went back to Memphis and was replaced by my girlfriend at the time. We lived there for a while, with Mike Goetz living on the living room couch and occasionally housing entire bands that would chain smoke around the living room table (aka Mike's room). After a while, Mike moved in across the street with Paul Yee, making 23rd Street home to one Goetz/Yi home and one Goetz/Yee home. It was weird but kind of awesome.

Here is Paul Yee with a wig...

In 2007, Yee replaced Yi (me) and Mike replaced my girlfriend at the time, making 213 23rd Street the Goetz, Goetz, Yee household that it is today.

I then went on to live in Windsor Terrace with said girlfriend, but lost the sweet apartment due to a breakup and ended up living in Prospect Heights with my good friend Patrick.

Patrick...

Patrick and I found Kevin on Craigslist.

After being tired of having entire families yell "China" at me while walking home in Prospect Heights, I decided I wanted to move as far away as possible. Deciding that Queens was just as far away as another country, I bought a condo in Forest Hills, and that is where I am typing this today.

I might have made this drastic decision too soon, considering I still have keys to So-Slo and visit quite often. It's definitely where the party is at. Perhaps I'll move back down to the neighborhood when we all get old.

The moral of this story? Don't move to Queens. I already did that for you.

  1. Oh my goodness, this is the best breakdown ever. I knew all of the facts but was still very intriged the entire time I read this. I loved it so much when that band stayed in my bedroom / your living room in the summer of 2005.
